Spokes to Offer 2024 Nonprofit Board Officer Training Workshops in February
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (January 22, 2024) — Spokes, an organization providing resources to support and empower the nonprofit community, will offer its 2024 Board Officer Training workshops this February for those serving or interested in the nonprofit board roles of president, secretary or treasurer.
With many boards experiencing changes in leadership at the start of the year, these timely online basic training courses will be presented by Spokes’ Chief Executive Officer Michael Simkins.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Board President will be held February 13 from noon to 1:30 p.m. This class will address the responsibilities, opportunities and limitations of the board president, how to plan the year, strategies for ensuring productiveboard meetings, basics of voting procedure and terminology and more.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Board Secretary will be held February 22 from noon to 1:30 p.m. This class will address mastery of minutes, the critical documents organizations should always have at hand and how technology can increase efficiency ofsecretarial responsibilities.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Board Treasurer will be held February 27 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. This class will address required financial reports and how they’re related, annual state and federal reporting requirements, and whether or not the boardtreasurer can also be the bookkeeper.

Michael Simkins, Ed.D., has been a member of several nonprofit boards and served as board secretary, treasurer, and president. His professional experience spans the education and nonprofit sectors, from being a school principal in Los Osos and Cal Poly lecturer to acting CEO of a major Silicon Valley nonprofit. He is the immediate past president at San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre and president of his local property-owners association. Currently, he is Spokes’ executive director.
