This program explores innovation in chamber music, from Mozart's final viola quintet to Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht, a sextet which marries musical metaphor to its namesake poem, "Transfigured Night". Also featured are Britten's charming "Phantasy" Quartet showcases oboe inside of a string quartet and Mahler's Piano Quartet, written when the composer was just 16, is Mahler's only surviving work of instrumental chamber music and established him as a force for music in the late 19th century. ?
