Spokes to Host Q&A Session for County Nonprofits 

on HR-Related Immigration Issues

Online session to provide nonprofit employers guidance on rights and obligations related to immigration actions

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (March 18, 2024) Spokes, an organization providing expert resources to empower the nonprofit community, will offer a special online session, Ask an Expert: HR & ICE, on March 26 and April 9 from noon to 1 p.m. 

Designed for nonprofit employers and managers and presented by Senior HR Professional Lita Unruh, the session will offer guidance on employer rights, responsibilities, and obligations in light of recent executive orders on immigration.

A brief presentation covering the following topics will precede an open Q&A session:

  • What to Do if ICE Shows Up

  • Creating an ICE Response Plan

  • Types of Warrants

  • Employee and Client Communication

  • Administrative Protocol, Including I-9 Forms

  • California’s Immigrant Worker Protection Act 

Additionally, attendees are able to submit questions at the time of registration.

"Spokes is hosting this session in response to collective concerns of county nonprofits and other partner organizations grappling with the challenges posed by recent executive orders on immigration and related issues," said Michael Simkins, CEO of Spokes. "Our goal is to support the nonprofit community by regularly connecting them with local experts who can offer clarity and guidance during this period of uncertainty."

Spokes plans to offer future Ask an Expert sessions on a variety of topics, including legal issues, fundraising and more.

About Presenter Lita Unruh:

Lita has more than 30 years of experience in Human Resources, holding key roles at both large public companies like Sun Microsystems and smaller private firms within the high-tech and services industries. She holds a degree in Communication Studies and Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. With a strong commitment to volunteerism, Lita has dedicated much of her time to making a positive impact on both individuals and the community, including supporting immigrant populations.
